Facebook Marketplace is the best place to find used cars in New Jersey right now. More inventory than Craigslist, more local sellers than dealerships, and you can message sellers directly. But there's also a lot of junk and scams. Here's how to separate the real deals from the garbage.
How to Search Effectively
When you search Facebook Marketplace for cars in the Jersey City area:
- Set a radius — 25 miles from Jersey City covers Hudson County, Newark, and the surrounding area. Expand to 50 if you're not finding what you want.
- Set a price range — Filter out anything under $2,000 (usually junk) and over your max budget.
- Search by make/model — If you know what you want, search directly: "Honda Accord," "Toyota Camry," etc.
- Check daily — Good cars sell in hours. Check morning and evening. Set up saved searches with notifications.
How to Spot a Scam
Fake listings are everywhere. Here's how to filter them out:
- Stock photos only. — If every photo looks like a professional dealership shot, it's fake. Real sellers take photos in their driveway or street.
- Price too good to be true. — A 2018 Accord with 40k miles listed for $6,000? That's a $14,000 car. It's a scam.
- Seller wants to move off Facebook. — "Email me at..." or "text this number" without chatting on Facebook first = scam.
- Shipping story. — "I'm selling for my brother who's deployed" or "the car is in another state, I'll ship it" = always fake.
- New or blank profile. — Check the seller's profile. If it was created last week and has no history, skip.
- Won't do a video call. — Ask for a quick video call to see the car. Scammers will refuse.
"If the seller won't meet in person, won't do a video call, and won't let you see the car before paying — it's a scam. Every time."
How to Spot a Real Deal
A genuine seller on Facebook Marketplace usually looks like this:
- Real photos taken in a driveway, street, or parking lot
- Detailed description with mileage, condition, and history
- Responds to messages within hours
- Willing to meet in person and let you test drive
- Has a Facebook profile with history and friends
- Title in their name and ready to transfer
Questions to Ask Before You Go See the Car
Message the seller before driving out. Ask:
- "Is the title clean and in your name?"
- "Why are you selling?"
- "Any mechanical issues or warning lights?"
- "Has it been in any accidents?"
- "Do you have maintenance records?"
- "When can I come see it?"
If they dodge any of these questions, move on.
Meeting Safely in Jersey City
When you go see a car from Facebook Marketplace:
- Meet in daylight — never at night
- Bring a friend
- Meet in a public place — the Jersey City MVC parking lot, a shopping center, or a police station parking lot
- Bring your driver's license and insurance card
- Don't bring cash to the first meeting — bring a cashier's check or plan to go to the bank together if you decide to buy
Should You Buy From a Dealer or Private Seller on Facebook?
Facebook Marketplace has both. Small dealers like me list there too. Here's the difference:
- Private sellers — Usually cheaper. No warranty. You're on your own for inspecting. Title transfer is between you and them.
- Small dealers — Slightly more expensive, but the car should be inspected and ready to go. I list my cars on Marketplace so people in Jersey City can find them easily.
- Big dealers — Most expensive. Financing available. More paperwork.
The Bottom Line
Facebook Marketplace is a goldmine for used cars in New Jersey — if you know how to filter. Search daily, spot scams fast, ask the right questions, and always see the car in person before paying. If that sounds like too much work, I do it for you — one inspected car at a time.
